For those of you who attended the Wildrice production, what's your take? Btw, SRT is putting up Twelfth night at Fort Canning next month. For those of you who want more Shakespeare.
So here are my comments after a precious evening spent at the theatre. And no no, you will not be graded on whether you posted here or not. But feel free to share.
My thoughts anyway: I've always hated R & J (it was my O level text) , not with the kanguage which I love but with the sappiness and siilliness of two teenagers taking their life. So I was not hopeful about my response to tonight's production. My premonition - I think I learnt that word, along with foreshadow when I studied the text - proved right. I was utterly bored by the time Romeo declared his love for Juliet and slid down into my seat in a posture of abject boredom. But I had to stay, it was a class excursion. What did I not like about the oroduction? It was, in myopnion, rather schizo - with snatches of singlish that didn't seem to fit in, weird modern/period costumes, unclear setting - I supposed it was inconsistent and it did't grip my attention. I think I prefer movie translations of the play.
i guess i have pretty much the same thoughts as you do. the schizophrenic-ness was painfully entertaining... there were some traces of the matrix, hunger games costumes/ parade, techno music, SYF drama [silver award], ghastly apparition on the screen, the list goes on... but i think some of us (at least i was) were laughing/ giggling at the wrong parts and got hushed by two ladies who genuinely wanted to watch the show. good for them...
i think the Friar (LYB) displayed the best acting skills out of all of them. ok, that's all.
